Commissioned for Manifesta 8, Hydra Decapita by the Otolith Group investigates in the imagined space of the Detroit-based electronic music duo Drexciya (1993–2002). Their music operated as the vehicle for the creation of a myth of a neo-Atlantis, a place peopled by the sub-aquatic descendants of drowned slaves. The film approaches this synthetic mythology in which the spectrum of capital might be rendered audible and visible. Instead of illustrating the spectres of capital, the film assembles a sense of poetic relationships, imagery that seeks to stand-in for the evidence of things not seen.
