None of the artists in this exhibition exist. All of the works are copies. Alias is an incomplete survey of invented artists. It includes works created by fictional others, spurious institutions, anonymous collectives and artists who have decided to inhabit an alternative version of themselves. Throughout history artists have deployed this strategy to explore issues of sexuality, gender, race or political repression in ways they could not have done otherwise. For others the strategy simply offered a respite from the exhausting job of being oneself. Alias is curated by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, also curators of the main Photomonth programme. The exhibition includes works by artists such as: Alec Soth, Alex Bag, Anne Land alias Eivind Reierstad, Aryan De Nooy, Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Atlas Group, Balthus, Barbara Hammer, Blinky Palermo, Bob & Roberta Smith, Brian O'Doherty, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Charles Freger, Christian Jankowski, Claes Oldenburg / Ray Gun, Claire Fontaine, Colette, Die Antwoord, Donelle Woolford AKA Joe Scanlan, Marcel Duchamp aka Rrose Salavy, Frederic Bourdin, Gillian Wearing, Jamie Shovlin, Jessica Sue Layton, Joan Fontcuberta, John Dogg, Kalup Linzy, Katarina Burin, Karlheinz Weinberger, Leila Hekmat, Man Ray, Max Pinckers, Matson Jones Custom Display, Matt Mullican, Meir Agassi, Olivier Castell, Oskar Karaś, Otolith Group, Pessoa Foundation, Peter Weibel, Reena Spaulings, Renzo Martens, Roee Rosen, Roger Ballen, Roni Horn, Ryan Trecartin, Salvador Dali, Shumon Basar, Eyal Weizman, Jane & Louise Wilson, Simon Fujiwara, Slater Bradley, Sophie Calle, Trisha Baga, Wayne Barker, William Kentridge, Zbigniew Libera.
