Tuesday 22 September 2009 In the Court of the Image: A Discussion with Eyal Sivan and The Otolith Group at The Showroom

The international hearings, commissions and show trials that originate from the tribunal have always demonstrated an affinity for the moving image because they depend on a public audience for their existence; the presence of cameras has already been written into their mise en scene. This conversation between Eyal Sivan and The Otolith Group takes Sivan's research into the politics of memory as a point of departure for an exploration of rarely seen films by Marcel Ophuls, Costa Gavras and others. Saturday 3 October 2009 Afterall Seminar with The Otolith Group at The Showroom

The event begins with the screening of the recently completed Otolith Trilogy (2003-2009) followed by a discussion around questions of the archive, potentiality and futurity explored throughout the trilogy. Respondents include Melissa Gronlund and Pablo Lafuente from Afterall, John Akomfrah, Lamia Joreige, Adrian Rifkin and Eyal Sivan. Saturday 17 October 2009 The Image in Question at The Showroom

What modes of address are emerging in contemporary artistic practice that question the testimonial capacities of sound and image as witnesses to violence? Sequences from A Journey (Lamia Joreige, 2006), Nights and Days (Lamia Joreige, 2007) and Nervus Rerum (The Otolith Group, 2008) will serve as points of departure for a discussion on the potentials and incapacities of the moving image between Lamia Joreige, Ghalya Saadawi and The Otolith Group. Sunday 25 October 2009

Route 181: Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel (Eyal Sivan and Michel Khleifi, 270 min, 2004) at The Showroom. The Showroom is an independent contemporary art space that is dedicated to exploring emerging practices and ideas in the context of cutting-edge contemporary culture. Since 1984 The Showroom has supported artists at pivotal stages of their careers, often by offering them their first solo exhibition, giving individual practices visibility. From 2009 onwards, its programme broadened to encompass a greater emphasis on discursive and process-based practices, cross-disciplinary approaches, forms of research, projects that are situated in the public realm, and collaborations on local and international levels.
