The Russian Connection

Discussion event at Gasworks

A visual discussion about the cinematographic training of Sarah Maldoror and her African peers in Soviet Russia. As well as tracing stylistic connections, speakers will address ideas around training and learning - or skills exchange - between Africa and the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impetus behind the Soviet Union's investment in African cinema.

Speakers include: Kodwo Eshun, artist and writer, Jeremy Hicks, senior lecturer in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film at Queen Mary, University of London, and Ros Gray, writer, theorist and lecturer in Critical Studies, Department of Art, Goldsmiths College and Tutor for Research, Curating Contemporary Art, the Royal College of Art.

This event is part of Foreword to Guns for Banta and has been co-curated by Basia Lewandowska Cummings.
