In The Year of The Quiet Sun

The Otolith Group's first solo exhibition in the Netherlands configures moments from the grand project of mid-twentieth century Pan-Africanism. Envisaged as the total liberation of the African continent from Europe's empires, the project focuses on a micro artifact, namely the postal stamp, issued to commemorate the independence of African nation-states. In the Year of the Quiet Sun incorporates three major new works consisting of a film, an Incomplete Timeline of Independence Stamps with over 4,000 stamps from Africa, and an installation devoted to the first decade in the publishing of controversial journal Transition.

Thoughtform

Thoughtform. The aim of the exhibition is not only to show the works to date by The Otolith Group, but to familiarise the viewer with their working methodology: a complex way of understanding how cinema invents the image and its way of relating to sound and to the voice. But what is it that drives The Otolith Group to this constant alteration of genres? An interest in the ability of thought to give form to ideas.

Curator: Chus Martínez.
Exhibition organised by: Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and coproduced in cooperation with the Fondazione MAXXI, Rome.

The Otolith Group at ARGOS

In its first floor exhibition space argos will present the film Otolith I, by the Otolith Group. The Otolith Group was founded in 2002 by the artist Anjalika Sagar and the cultural theorist Kodwo Eshun, who collaborated with the artist Richard Couzins to make Otolith I. The film essay probes the potency of archival images, exploring the poeticisation of mediated memory. Taking its name from otoliths, the minute particles found in the inner ear that help us to balance and to navigate our way across space, the film aims at reorienting our perceptions of the world by weaving personal and public histories together into a meditation upon the persistence of utopian aspirations.
