As part of their ongoing series Images Sometimes Tremble, The Otolith Collective in collaboration with The Showroom presents the first London screenings of Two Russians in the Free World (2012, 30 m) and Cloud Cuckoo Land (2008, 17m), two single channel videos by the renowned New York based artists Erik Moskowitz and Amanda Trager.

Both works will be introduced by the artists and screened at 19.00pm on 1 February 2013 at The Showroom. The screenings will be followed by a discussion between Erik Moskowitz, Amanda Trager and Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun of The Otolith Collective. ( Please note The Otolith Collective is a public platform curated and produced by The Otolith Group).

On April the 2nd at 7pm No.w.here is happy to announce the London premiere screening of Anathema (2011) 36mins HD Video /Colour/ Sound, followed by a Q and A with the artists Kodwo Eshun and Anjali Sagar.

ANATHEMA re-imagines the microscopic behaviour of liquid crystals undergoing turbulence as a sentient entity that possesses fingertips and eyes enthralled by the LCD touch-screens of communicative capitalism. It can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates and recombines the magical gestures of dream factory capitalism. By bringing the telecommunicating couplings of mother-father-daughter-son-machines and boyfriend-girlfriend-units into contact with the conductive imagery of liquid crystallization, ANATHEMA proposes itself as a prototype for a counter-spell assembled from the possible worlds of capitalist sorcery.

The Otolith Group is an award winning artist led collective and organisation founded by Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun in 2002 that integrates film and video making, artists' writing, workshops, exhibition curation, publication and developing public platforms for the close readings of the image in contemporary society. The group`s work is formally engaged with research led projects exploring the legacies and potentialities of artist led proposals around the document and the essay film, the archive, the aural and sonic medium, speculative futures and science-fictions. Recent solo exhibitions include: Westfailure Mumbai (2011) Thoughtform at Museu d' Art Contemporani de Barcelona and Maxxi Museum Rome (2011). Their work has been presented at "Critique and Clinic" The Forum Expanded, Berlinale (2012), The 29th Bienal de Sao Paulo (2010) and Manifesta 8: The European Biennal of Contemporary Art, Murcia (2010). The Otolith Group in Budapest at Blood Mountain



The Otolith Group: February 2012 artists-in-residence programme
Blood Mountain is pleased to announce the theme and public programme of The Otolith Group’s residency in Budapest in February 2012, the collective’s first project in Central Europe.

Theme
The occupation of The Otolith Group (The Group) at Blood Mountain is part of an ongoing research project about the politics of nuclear energy. Given Hungary’s role as an important scientific hub of the USSR and its advantageous geographic position as the closest Soviet satellite state to western Europe, Budapest also nurtured the developmental years of three Hungarian scientists, who later played crucial roles in the invention of atomic energy: Leo Szilárd, Edward Teller, Eugene Wigner. The residency provides an unparalleled opportunity for The Group to gather original data and footage, and to develop the work using Budapest’s outstanding film facilities, considered an important creative hub for moving image between the two world wars, having fostered the medium’s early pioneers before their respective emigration: Alexander Korda, founding member of the British film industry, and Michael Curtiz, a central figure of Hollywood’s golden age; and as a production set for some of the most ubiquitous and often anonymous Soviet documentary and propaganda films. The Group’s work at Blood Mountain is scheduled for completion in summer 2012 and will return to Blood Mountain for a special screening and artists-led discussion in autumn 2012.

Screening of collective’s namesake trilogy: Otolith I, 2003; Otolith II, 2007; Otolith III, 2009 Introduction and discussion with the artists, Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun

Set between the 22nd century (I); today’s Mumbai and Chandigarh: India’s first planned city designed by Le Corbusier in the 1950s (II); and the fictional future of an unrealised Indian science fiction movie from 1967 (III), the work projects a mutant future, fusing fiction and non-fiction through the juxtaposition of documentary footage, archival materials and new imagery.

According to activist and critic Sabu Kohso, the meltdown of the three nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi on 11 March 2011 signals a new phase in the war of the ‘global nuclear regime’ against all ‘other life forms.’ The seminar will examine the histories of artistic forms of abstraction in relation to the planetary existence of the ‘global nuclear regime’, especially in practices of abstraction that aim to produce forms of the audible and the visible in relation to the necropolitics and chronopolitics of radiation.

The Otolith Group (est. 2002 by Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun) is an award-winning artist-led collective and organisation. Its name refers to a miniscule organ in the inner ear responsible for one’s gravity and linear acceleration. Working in video and film, the collective provides a platform for discourse on artistic production and the importance of imagery and sound in contemporary culture. Westfailure
Project 88, Mumbai 11 - 31 January 2012
Project 88 is pleased to announce Westfailure, The Otolith Group’s first solo exhibition in Mumbai, in collaboration with British Council India.
The Otolith Group was founded in 2002 by Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar. The Turner Prize nominated artists, who live and work in London, are renowned for their videos, curatorial practice, writing, publications and development of discursive platforms for the close readings of documentary fictions.
Westfailure, the title of the exhibition chosen by the artists, has been adopted from The Westfailure System, the influential essay written by British economist Susan Strange in 1999. Westfailure is a homonymic pun that refers to the Westphalia System, the ‘international political system of states claiming exclusive authority and the monopoly of legitimate violence within their territorial limits’, named after the Treaty of Westphalia signed by the European powers, in Westphalia outside Munster, Germany in 1648. http://www.project88.in/#
